Be determined to overcome deadline-oriented working. Try to plan your work ahead, generally with a ‘I will write the report for next week already this week’ -attitude. For many people, deadline-oriented working is just a habit. They often get into busy-busy-situations because:
a) This is the only way they can, with a good conscience, let go of their perfectionism
b) they might be addicted to adrenaline which is caused by doing things in a hurry and succeeding in doing them
c) their schedule/task management is insufficient
d) their bosses often give last minute tasks
Only d) is something you can hardly affect yourself. The others you can decide to change. You know it. Use the fast solutions from the previous chapter to get started.
Learn how to delegate. If you are on manager/senior level, or you have employees, learn how to delegate and share your tasks. You might have too much to do just because you do not know how to delegate tasks. Maybe you are a perfectionist here as well: ‘Only I can do them the right way’. Or you simply do not know how to delegate. When your boss is telling you to ‘take care of this’, it does not mean that you have to do it. Seniors and managers who seem inefficient are often caught in this trap. If you identify yourself in this, do something about it. Maybe you can spar this with your superior.
Get enough sleep. Are you sleeping enough? You are being most productive when you are alert. Try to sleep at least seven hours a night. Allow yourself to sleep longer during one night per week, for example the night between Friday and Saturday. The ideal situation would be that you allowed yourself to go to sleep earlier on one evening during the working days as well.
Learn by making mistakes. My own attitude is that whenever I find myself in deadline oriented doing, my time management has failed. And let me tell you – it isn’t easy, failures still happen. If this happens to you, think about the reasons for why it happened, and what you could have done another way. Think about the moment, that is enough. It is hard to get out of habit. And you should not stress about this too much. It is all about life-long learning. I have managed to make some significant changes in my life, and I am sure that you can achieve this, too!
