Setting Life Goals in Four Areas of Life

The Four Areas of Life – Setting Life Goals

In the book Automatic Wealth, Michael Masterson presents four areas of life which he recommends that you use when setting life goals. You may also call this “big picture” a vision – your personal life vision – if you may. In my opinion his framework is good and easy to understand and that is why I also recommend it. The four areas of life for setting life goals are:

  1. Health: What are your long-term goals concerning your own wellbeing?
  2. Wealth: What financial position do you want to achieve?
  3. Social: How would you like to interact with your family and friends? What kind of relationship do you want with them?
  4. Personal: What have you always wanted to do just for your own pleasure? (learning new languages, for example)

The long-term life goals should be set to 5-7 years from now. If we make plans for the future beyond that, many unpredictable factors might enter the picture, and thus they can be considered as dreams rather than future plans.
