Time management is actually life management

You can’t actually manage time, and that is why the term ‘time management’ in fact isn’t the best description of what this website is all about. We will, however, in the lack of a more suitable term, stick to using ‘time management’. Time is running and it is moving onwards, no matter what you do. What we can affect is HOW we use the time given to us.

For example, do you choose to watch television more than three hours a day? Or maybe your choice is to work ten hours a day, and even to do some work on Saturdays?

Have you thought about what you want to achieve in your career?

Or why don’t we move to the next level straight away – have you ever stopped to think what you are aiming at in your life? Where do you want to be in 5-7 years? What will you have achieved, what will you be doing then?

If the topics mentioned above seem partly unclear to you, your life might feel confusing and dizzy from time to time.

Nowadays some continuous stress is also caused by work life, and its constantly tightening requirements of qualification and productivity. You might not be able to get work-related thoughts out of your mind before late in the evening – some people may even wake up in the middle of the night to think about them.

We are facing more and more demands all the time, and many people become stressed because of this.

Can you find the solution in the techniques of time management?

David Allen, one of the gurus of time management, has set achieving a certain state of mind as the ultimate goal of time management techniques. He describes this state as ‘mind like water’.

According to my free interpretation, this mind like water means a state in which:

  1. You know where you are going in life.
  2. You are not worried about whether you will manage the daily challenges you confront, as you know you will be able to deal with them at least as well as other people do.
  3. You have a functioning system to manage your work. That is why you don’t have to continuously or subconsciously make efforts to remember all your tasks and duties, but your mind can also rest.

I agree with Allen on the fact that time management is a sort of preventive stress management. This is of course easy to agree on, as most other writers in the field have more or less the same kind of opinions.

Time management, however, consists of many other things as well. After having updated your work efficiency, you may cope with things you would not have thought about being able to cope with before. At this stage you will notice that you are getting an extra portion of satisfaction out of time management into your daily life.
